Comments: Upon immigrating to NYC in 1956 he worked as an assistant to Mathew Brady in NYC and became manager of his Wash., DC gallery. In 1862, he established his own gallery in Washington and soon rivaled Brady as the country"s most prominent photographer. Important among his works are his 1863 portraits of Pres. Lincoln, a series on Lincoln"s funeral, and the hanging of the assasination conspirators. His masterpiece series on the Civil War was the two-volume Photographic Sketchbook of the War.
