Comments: Abstract artist, who in 1935 he broke from representational art and alligned himself with the American Abstract Artists group. He worked in a pure geometric style until after 1950, when his work became more gestural, while still retaining some geometric properties. Teaching: Univ NC, Greensboro, 1964; Yale Univ, 1966-67; Columbia Univ, 1969.
