Paris becomes the world capital of photography this November, playing host to numerous exhibitions, fairs and auctions. Now in its 14th year, the Month of Photography will provide the occasion for more than 80 themed exhibitions. At the heart of the festivities, Paris Photo, the prestigious international fair held at the Carrousel du Louvre between 16 and 19 November and now in its tenth year, will showcase the works of 106 artists in 88 galleries — a vast panorama of the photography market embracing everything from the early masters to the very latest works.

Robert Mapplethorpe in New York [17.07.2005]

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is hosting an important exhibition of the works of the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, which runs until 24 August 2005. Entitled “Robert Mapplethorpe and the Classical Tradition: Photographs and Mannerist Prints”, the exhibition is showing 42 historic etchings and woodcuts from the Hermitage alongside 74 photographs by Mapplethorpe.

The photography market has been expanding rapidly for the past five years and is today one of the art world’s fastest-growth segments.

A wave of enthusiasm among younger generation collectors has driven contemporary photography prices up by 92% in less than six years, an annual growth rate of more than 12.7%. This kind of speculative rally used to be the preserve of big name German and US photographers, but in the last few months the market seems to have been led by less renowned artists of other nationalities.
