Biografie von Catharine MEARS (?-c.1877)

Addresses: NYC, 1835-77

Profession: Teacher of drawing & painting

Exhibited: Apollo Assoc., 1839 ("specimens of flower painting" & "specimen drawing in black lead," accompanied by description, "as taught by Mrs. Mears.")

Comments: Was listed as an artist and artist-teacher until the forties when she apparently opened a boarding and day school. Mrs. Mears' school on Madison Avenue was still flourishing when she retired or died about 1877 and it continued under the direction of Louisa Mears, who was probably her daughter.
