Biografie von George HARVEY (1835-1920)

Birth place: Iowa (probably)

Addresses: Somerset, IA; Burlington, IA, 1850

Profession: Landscape and portrait painter

Studied: George Harvey, in Boston (probably during the late 1850s); Thomas Hicks in NYC (just as the Civil War broke out)

Comments: Nephew of George Harvey (c.1800-78, see entry). The young Harvey's art studies in the East were halted by the Civil War. After the war ended, he returned to his family in Burlington (IA) and lived there for most of his long life, working as a printer but still painting landscape scenes along the Mississippi. He is said to have painted portraits of three governors of Missouri. In 1920, he was still living in Burlington and was then over 85 years of age.

Sources: G&W; Ness and Orwig, Iowa Artists, 96-97, includes quotes from two 1920 (Burlington, IA) newspaper articles about Harvey, one of which was an interview with the artist.
