Comments: McClurg traveled to Düsseldorf with Emanuel Leutze (see entry). He returned to the U.S. about 1846 and was active in Pittsburgh through c.1859, when he moved to NYC. By at least 1863 he was back in Pittsburgh, moved to Chambersburg (PA) by 1879, at which point he had practically given up painting, doing commercial photography instead. Specialized in historical and allegorical subject matter, including a number of specifically American scenes involving Indians and pioneers. He operated a design school with George Hetzel in Pittsburgh, 1863-65, later teaching drawing at the Pittsburgh School of Design for Women.
