1926:Finds himself unable to part with the ‘Water lily’ pictures. He destroys a few more of them. In August, a tumour in the lung is diagnosed. On 5 December, he dies of sclerosis of the lungs in the presence of Clemenceau.
1925:At the beginning of the year he says he wishes to withdraw from the donation, which evokes a harsh response from Clemenceau. Motivated by his improved sight, Monet works intensively through the summer in the open. From autumn onwards, he devotes hims
1924:Although the delivery date for the ‘Water lily’ decorations has expired, Monet will not part with the pictures. At the end of the year, his sight improves with the help of new lenses.

1922:Paul Durand-Ruel dies. Signs a provisional document donating the Grandes Décorations to the state. Because of the poor state of his eyes, he has to stop painting temporarily. Destroys several paintings.
1921:Bonnier submits a number of designs to Monet, but he doesn’t like them. The authorities suggest making an existing building available. The choice falls on the Orangerie in the Tuileries. Camille Lefèvre is appointed as the new architect.
1920:Negotiations with the state over the donation of the Grandes Décorations, for which he demands that an appropriate exhibition space be made available. Architect Louis Bonnier is commissioned to design a pavilion for the garden of the Hôtel Biron.
1919:His eyesight continues to deteriorate, but he is afraid to have an operation for fear of going blind.
1918:After the armistice, he wishes to donate two pictures to the state, to celebrate the victory of the Allies. Clemenceau and Geffroy propose the construction of a peace hall with twelve large wall panels by the artist.
1916:Throughout the war, Monet donates paintings to charitable institutions.
1914:Jean Monet dies.
1913:Travels to Switzerland.
1912:Learns in July that he is suffering from a double cataract.
1911:Alice dies.
1909:His eyesight becomes increasingly poor.

1884:Returns to Italy, remaining in Bordighera until April. He spends the summer painting in Giverny and on the coast at Étretat. Initiates monthly Impressionist meetings at the Café Riche in Paris.
1883:The family moves to Giverny. Monet stocks his garden, painting taking a back seat. At the end of the year, he and Renoir travel to the Mediterranean coast, visiting Cézanne in L’Estaque.
1882:Works in Dieppe and Pourville, where he spends the summer.
1881:Alice Hoschedé and her six children still live with the Monets. With a joint household of ten, they move to a larger house in Poissy.
1879:Camille dies.
1878:Birth of second son Michel. In August, the family moves in with the Hoschedés in Vétheuil, on the Seine.
1877:Camille seriously ill. Monet’s patron Hoschedé is bankrupted, with profound effects on Monet’s finances and subsequent family life.
1876:Acquires a generous patron in store director Ernest Hoschedé. Paints his first decorative works.
1875:Financial situation deterioriates.
1874:First exhibition by the ‘Société’, later called the 1st Impressionist exhibition. One of Monet’s paintings, Impression, soleil levant, leads to the group as a whole being called Impressionists. More Seine pictures from the boat, and works with Manet
1873:Founding of the ’Société anonyme des artistes peintres, sculpteurs, graveurs, etc.
1872:Paints river scenes of the Seine in Argenteuil from his studio boat. Sells to Durand-Ruel and private collectors. Able to afford a more comfortable lifestyle at last.
1871:Studies paintings by John Constable and William Turner. Returns to Paris via Holland and, at the end of the year, moves to Argenteuil.
1870:Marries Camille, Courbet is his witness. Spends summer in Trouville. Outbreak of Franco-Prussian War. In autumn, Monet flees with his family to London to avoid conscription. Paints first views of London. Becomes acquainted with his future dealer Paul
1869:Moves to Bougival, where he paints with Renoir at the resort of La Grenouillère on the Seine. First purely Impressionist paintings. Renoir helps Monet out with food.
1868:Monet, Camille and Jean move to Bonnières-sur-Seine, then to Le Havre, Fécamp and Étretat.
1867:Lives and works with Bazille again. Birth of his son by Camille, Jean-Armand-Claude.
1866:Moves to Sèvres. Meets Edouard Manet. Spends summer painting in Sainte-Adresse and Honfleur. Meets up with Boudin again and Gustave Courbet.
1865:Joint studio with Bazille. Close contacts with Pissarro, Renoir and Sisley. Acquaintance with Henri Fantin-Latour.
1864:Makes acquaintance of medical student Georges Clemenceau, later a publisher, politician and ultimately Prime Minister of France. Stays in Honfleur with Boudin, Bazille, Jondkind.
1863:Together with Bazille, paints landscapes out of doors during the spring at Chailly near Barbizon.
1862:Discharged, meets Jongkind and entered the studio of Gleyre in Paris where his fellow pupils Renoir, Sisley, Bazille became his friends.
1861:Military service with the 1st African Cavalry Regiment in Algiers
1859:Moves to Paris
1856 – 1857:Earns money doing caricatures and landscape sketches. Becomes acquainted with landscape painter Eugène Boudin. First experiments in open-air painting.
