Comments: WPA artist, 1934-39. After Kallem won first prize in the 1947 Pepsi Cola exhibition for his painting, "Country Tenement," Life magazine ran an article, "Freak Painting Prizes" (August, 1948), recounting the controversy over awards being given to what some critics considered unintelligible modern art. Teaching: priv. school, New York Studio; priv. school, Roslyn, NY; YWCA, NY. He was the brother of Herbert Kallem and the son of Morris Kallem.
