Biografie von Joseph JACKSON (1796-1850)

Birth place: England

Death place: Charleston, SC

Addresses: Charleston, SC, from 1834

Profession: Portrait and miniature painter, restorer

Exhibited: Royal Academy (between 1816 and 1835, as J. Jackson, Jr.); NAD (1833, as J. Jackson)

Comments: Described as formerly of Oxford, England, when he arrived in Charleston in 1834. Groce & Wallace suggested that he may have been the J. Jackson, Jr., of Oxford, who exhibited miniatures at the Royal Academy between 1816 and 1835. He apparently stopped in NYC on his way from England to South Carolina, as he was listed in the city directory for 1833 (as Joseph Jackson) and also exhibited (as J. Jackson at same address as Joseph Jackson) at the National Academy that year. After his death in June 1850, his wife, Mrs. Henry Jackson, and son, Henry Jackson (see entries for each) carried on his restoration business in Charleston.
