Comments: He is thought to have worked as a physician, farmer, and mercenary ó even as secretary to Napoleon before coming to America. His earliest portrait is dated 1807 in Baltimore, where he married. During the 1820s he was active in Lancaster and Lebanon counties (PA). By 1841, he and his family had settled in New Harmony, IN. Maentle painted small watercolor portraits of his family and friends, and detailed interiors or outdoor settings.
