New York’s Impressionist & Modern sales produce very mixed results [09.11.2009]

The two days of Impressionist & Modern auctions in New York saw the art market in full roller-coaster mode: after a very uninspiring evening at Christie’s that generated just $56.8m on 3 November 2009 (vs. $116.9m on 6 November 2008), Sotheby’s posted $102m more than its rival ($158.6m vs. $196.8m on 3 November 2008) the following day and several new records.

The Durand-Ruel Impressionists [17.08.2009]

As the art market slumbers during the summer months, preparations are underway for the major autumn sales, the dates of which have already been announced. The first big events are located in New York during September with sales of Indian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean art on the 16th at Christie’s and the 17th at Sotheby’s, and then Contemporary Art sales on the 23rd at Christie’s and the 24th at Sotheby’s.

No surprise in London [29.06.2009]

The results of the Impressionist & Modern sales in London last week were without surprise (except for the withdrawal of Camille PISSARRO’s, Le Quai Malaquais) and made the era of 8-figure auction results an even more distant memory. Both auction houses generated eight sales above the $1m line. The bought-in rate was not identical however: 15% at Sotheby’s (out of 27 lots presented) and 32% at Christie’s (out of 45 lots offered).

London sales: second round [22.06.2009]

On 23 June, Christie’s will be offering 45 Impressionist & Modern works in London and the following day Sotheby’s will present just 27 pieces. The catalogues feature works by Picasso, Claude Monet and Giacometti. On 25 and 30 June, the two auctioneers will open their Contemporary Art sales

Neo-impressionism – the science of colour [11.01.2009]

The neo-impressionist masterpieces on loan from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan in New York can still be seen at the Palazzo Reale in Milan up to January 25 2009 in the exhibition Georges Pierre SEURAT, Paul SIGNAC and the Neo-impressionists.

The New York sales at new highs [28.10.2007]

On 6 and 7 November the two key sales of the auction season will take place in New York. Sotheby’s and Christie’s have assembled for the occasion a selection of important works by Paul Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Cézanne and even Franz Marc. To date, pre-sale estimates from the two auction houses have never been so high.

Maximilien Luce – impressionist heritage [29.08.2006]

Maximilien LUCE was one of the major artists of the neo-impressionist period. He was associated with Camille PISSARRO, Paul SIGNAC and Georges Pierre SEURAT who was probably the key figure of the neo-impressionist movement. During his life, i.e. between the 1880s and his death in 1941, Luce produced a large volume of work that includes oil paintings, lithographs and numerous drawings.<%/DESC%>

His favourite themes – which happen to be the most sought-after on the market – are the leisures and labours of the ordinary people of his epoch, as well as landscapes of Paris, Normandy and Brittany. As an ardent anarchist, Luce was particularly keen on depicting the living conditions of his working-class contemporaries in realist and everyday situations.

Cezanne and Pissarro at the MoMA [10.07.2005]

The MoMA (New York) is presenting a major impressionist exhibition running until 12 September 2005, entitled “Pioneering Modern Painting: Cézanne and Pissarro 1865–1885” in which a selection of 85 works traces the career of these two Impressionist masters. Cézanne and Pissarro first met in 1861 and subsequently worked regularly together in Pontoise and Auvers sur Oise.

The Neo-Impressionist market [23.03.2005]

From 15 March to 10 July 2005, the Musée d’Orsay is showing 120 neo-impressionist paintings as part of its major exhibition entitled “Neo-Impressionism: from Seurat to Paul Klee”. The exhibition begins with works by Georges Seurat, the movement’s founder, and rounds off with works by artists who were influenced by the movement, such as Matisse, Derain, Kandinsky and Maurice de Vlaminck.

Finding a niche in a declining market.

Collectors are being bombarded with offers aimed at reviving the current sluggish market. But the figures tell a different story. The buy-in ratio over the last six months has averaged 37% and auction houses are increasingly struggling to fill their catalogues. By 23 September, only 185 fine art sales had been announced for October 2003 compared to 263 a year earlier.

Star turns at the Impressionism & Modern Art auctions in New York [16.04.2003]
