Return of market effervescence [17.05.2010]

With a large number of major collectors clearly back in acquisitive mode, the results of the big sales in New York during May amply covered the price expectations and were a far cry from those posted in May 2009.

Mark Rothko [30.11.2008]

London’s Tate Modern is currently holding an exhibition of Mark Rothko’s later works through to 1st February 2009. The collection plunges the viewer into his deep “colorfields” – chromatic spaces for meditation.

The New York School [26.06.2008]

The European artists who sought refuge in New York during the Second World War helped stoke up a simmering US art scene. A resurgence in US painting was in the making. A resurgence that would be abstract and manifest in two key movements: Action painting, consisting of gestural painting that emphasised the physical act of painting, and Color Field painting, characterised by large, flat areas of vibrant colour conducive to meditation.

Contemporary Russia – An emerging market [06.05.2007]

After Sotheby’s sale of contemporary Russian art in February and the second edition of the Moscow biennial art fair in March, contemporary Russian art is enjoying considerable effervescence. In historical terms, Russian artists’ freedom to express themselves is a relatively recent phenomenon. For example, in 1974 an exhibition of non-conformists in Moscow was demolished by a State bulldozer. Over recent years the cultural face of the Russian capital has changed radically with the opening of contemporary art centres. Although much of the contemporary work is focused on social and political critiques of the old communist regime, a broad diversification of artistic languages is beginning to emerge. Contemporary Russian art is attracting more and more amateur art collectors; however, for the time being, the majority of professional collectors are still of Russian origin.

The New York School [02.01.2007]

After World War II, American painting was revived by a number of young artists. Influenced by surrealism, they eschewed reality and began a free style of painting that developed into two basic trends: “Action painting” and “Colorfield painting”.

5,000 works of art permanently on offer on the new standardised marketplace [06.04.2005]

After only two months since its launch, Artprice’s new marketplace for artwork continues to boom. In March, Artprice’s Classified Ads section counted 450,000 visitors. At the beginning of April 2005, over 5,000 works by almost 4,000 artists were up for sale every day on this marketplace! By way of comparison, Art Basel and the FIAC each exhibit 1,500 artists.

Booming contemporary art auctions [24.05.2004]

The New York contemporary art market has posted strong growth over the last five years. Turnover at Sotheby’s and Christie’s evening auctions has climbed steadily to reach a total of USD 168 million in 2004 compared with USD 100 million in 1999.

Abstract expressionism, fetching the highest prices at contemporary art auctions [18.05.2004]

Abstract expressionism, the most influential American art movement of the 1960s, is topping the bill at the most prestigious contemporary art auctions. After occupying pride of place at the MoMA (New York) for over fifty years, Number 12 (1949), a “drip painting” on paper by Jackson POLLOCK found a buyer at Christie’s on 11 May 2004 at USD 10 million. The next day, the euphoria continued with more extremely high bids including an artist’s record for Clyfford STILL’s 1960-F which went under the hammer at USD 2.8 million.

A revival in the contemporary art market? [20.05.2003]

Excellent results from the contemporary art auctions in New York on 13-14 May 2003. After a worthy but slow start as Sotheby’s turned over USD27.4 million the first evening, Christie’s hosted a hectic sale the next day that brought in USD68.8 million.
