Comments: Came to NYC in 1870. America's earliest social reform photographer, he first illustrated slum and sweatshop conditions for the New York Tribune (1877-88) and the Evening Sun (1888-on). His influential books are: How the Other Half Lives (1890), Children of the Poor (1892), Out of Mulberry St. (1898), The Making of an American (1901), and Children of the Tenements (1903). His work was continued by Jessie T. Beales and Lewis Hine. The three all influenced the "Ashcan school" of painters.
