Comments: Apprenticed to Glasgow lithographers at age 14 and was a lithographer in London in 1851. Was in India, 1856-63. From 1865-85 he was Special Artist for Illustrated London News, traveling extensively including a world trip in 1872. In 1873 he accompanied A. Bierstadt (see entry) to Yosemite.
