Comments: Although he painted genre and architectural subjects, he was best known as a portrait painter. In 1841, when he was eleven, his widowed mother brought him to Iowa. During the 1850s, he studied in Paris, and in 1862 returned to settle in NYC. On his next extended European trip, he was living in Rome from 1871-78, visiting Egypt in 1875. He returned to NYC in 1878 and during the early 1880s began summering at Lake George, NY.
