Comments: Studied law in NYC and was admitted to the bar in 1862, but soon after gave up law to establish a career in the arts. From 1869 to 1872 he was American Consulat at Rome; in 1878 he was director of the American section of the Art Dept. at the Paris Expo, for which he received the Legion of Honor of France. He painted a number of Roman and Venetian views but is best known for his work in stained glass.
