Comments: Bigelow earned a considerable reputation in Chicago for his landscapes and still lifes. Many of his landscape subjects were painted in New York and New England for Chicago patrons with roots back east. He was connected with a group of artists headed by G.P.A. Healy, and with them organized the Academy of Design, which later became the Art Institute of Chicago.

Sources: G&W; [Groce & Wallace pointed out that the Art Annual, VIII (1910/11), 397, obit., erroneously states that Bigelow was born at Peru (IN), and that the error is repeated in Burnet, Art and Artists of Indiana, in Smith, and in Mallet]. More recently, see Gerdts, Art Across America, vol. 2: 287, 288 (repro.).
