Work and Life

1958:He became a French citizen.
1943:He visited Sedona, Arizona, USA with Dorothea TANNING.
1941:Emigrated to the USA he settled in New York NY, USA and married the art collector Peggy GUGGENHEIM to be able to live in the USA during the war.
1939:He was interned in a French prison camp on the false accusation that he was spying. He escaped, only to discover that his lover Leonora CARRINGTON had had an emotional breakdown and had sold his house for a bottle of brandy, leaving him homeless.
1938:He left the Surrealist movement.
1921:He was invited by André BRETON to Paris, France where he befriended Tristan TZARA and Sophie TAEUBER.
1920:Along with Johannes BAARGELD and Hans ARP, he founded the Cologne Dada group.
1911:He became acquainted with the “Blaue Reiter”, Guillaume APOLLINAIRE, Georges GROSZ as well as Hans ARP.
