Florence Biennale XI
Florence
Italien

The XIth edition of the Florence Biennale - International Contemporary Art Biennial of Florence (Italy) is going to be held at the Fortezza da Basso, Spadolini Pavilion, from 6 to 15 October 2017.

Founded in 1997, the Florence Biennale has become one of the foremost contemporary art events on the international scene. Throughout its tenth previous editions, over 5,500 artists from around the world have gathered in Florence to join in. Every two years the Florence Biennale enlivens the Medicean city with a programme of collateral events such as conferences, displays, performances, workshops and lectures. All this with a view to offer artists and their audience the opportunity to engage with art and culture, and know more about the theme of the edition of the biennial. The XIth Florence Biennale, themed ‘eARTh: Creativity & Sustainability’ is aimed at contributing to envision a future in which creativity and sustainability are inspiring principles of an artistic and cultural ‘ecosystem’ within a world that is respectful of nature and life forms on Earth.

During each edition the ‘Lorenzo il Magnifico’ Lifetime Achievement Awards are conferred to individuals and institutions who have reached pinnacles of artistic achievement or stood out for their contribution to culture. Awardees include, amongst others, Marina Abramović, Anish Kapoor, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and Marta Minujín.

Within the framework of the XIth Florence Biennale, celebrating twenty years of activity, the Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Awards will be bestowed on Architect Arata Isozaki from Japan, and Internationally acclaimed artist El Anatsui from Ghana.

Finally, the Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Award in memoriam will be bestowed upon Italian artist Sauro Cavallini (1927-2016) during a celebration to be attended by his heirs.
