SICD Art Day
Hong Kong
Hongkong

The South Island Cultural District (SICD) galleries and artist studios will open their doors as part of Art Basel HK and Art Central VIP Programs. Yet this even is also open to the general public and the admission is free. Following highly successful South Island Art Days over the past 4 years, the SICD is expecting over 2000 local and international art lovers to attend the event held in “Hong Kong’s New Destination for Contemporary Art”.

Indoor Exhibitions and performances
SICD promises an exciting and varied program including art exhibitions in 16 art spaces, giving visitors the opportunity to attend exhibition openings, interact with local and international artists, experience contemporary art, performances, as well as enjoy free food and drink from our south side partners.

Outdoor installation
Beside the indoor art activities, we will run an outdoor installation program. Around 10 local and international artists will install interactive pieces in the streets of Wong Chuk Hang. Visitors will therefore be able to experience more art from different artists going from one gallery to another.

Art World Forum
This year we are once again partnering with the ART WORLD FORUM to host a series of talks from 10am to 2pm. Prestigious international and local speakers will cover a variety of topics related to art. The ART WOLD FORUM will take place at L’Hotel South.

What is the South Island Cultural District (SICD)?
Founded in 2013, SICD is currently formed by 19 galleries and art spaces in the South Island areas of Wong Chuk Hang and Tin Wan. With the exception of Central, no other district in Hong Kong can claim to have so many high quality galleries located in the same area. And no other district has so many galleries hosting exhibitions in large industrial spaces (ranging from 3000 to 5000sf). SICD is a major evolution and improvement to the Hong Kong art scene and the South Island district has become Hong Kong’s new destination for contemporary art.

Objectives of the SICD

Led by contemporary art galleries, the core objective of the SICD is create the first homegrown art district in Hong Kong. Currently, the SICD coordinates joint openings, organizes specific events like the bi-annual South Island Art Days, run an education program and liaise with local and international art fairs, art festivals and organizations to promote the area. The SICD also published twice a year a South Island Art Guide, available at key distribution points throughout Hong Kong. The SICD has a website and sends monthly e-newsletters with updated information about spaces, exhibitions, special events and show openings.
