Duncan GRANT (1885-1978)
“Greek landscape” 1910 - Oil painting on hard board signed bottom right « Grant » and dated « 10 » for 1910. Dimensions 43.5x57.5cm Framed 56.5x71cm.
It is known that Grant met Matisse in 1909 and subsequently set up his own studio in London. He then visited Greece in 1910, and frequently visited Paris before the war, making several visits to Picasso's studio. The Tate archives have a letter from Vanessa Bell to Duncan Grant, dated 6 March 1910 offering him travel advice for his upcoming trip to Greece and Asia Minor with John Maynard Keynes.
The vibrant colours and dynamic forms reflect the influence of Matisse, Gauguin, Cézanne and van Gogh. These were the chief artists introduced to British audiences through Roger Fry’s ‘Manet and the Post-Impressionists’ exhibition, which was held at the Grafton Galleries in London between 1910 and 1911.
A still life painting titled “Lemon gatherers” also dated 1910 is similarly painted on a hardboard.
