The portrait in question can be attributable, by the signature on the cartouche, to the hand of Pietro Labruzzi (1739-1805), a famous Roman painter, eldest son of Giacomo Romano, a manufacturer of velvets. His youthful formation probably took place in the bed of the Neapolitan artistic colony operating in the papal capital, frequenting artists active in the circle of the painter Sebastiano Conca. Starting from the seventies, in accordance with the classicist style reform and with the renewal of taste in the capital, Labruzzi's pictorial language gradually transformed on a stylistic and compositional level, dramatizing itself, and opening up to a palette of bright and earthy tones. His fame allowed him to receive important commissions also from abroad and obtain relevant awards.
