The four tempera in question were made, as indicated by the signature at the bottom right, by Antonio Coppola (1850-1902), a Neapolitan painter active in Naples and who lived in the second half of the nineteenth century. After attending the courses of the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples, he stayed in Greece for two years, carrying out decoration works. In 1883 he participated in the Rome Exhibition and then at the Exhibition of the Promotrice in Naples and in Florence. The four eruptions are distinguished by the great quality expressed in a delicate moonlight atmosphere, which contrasts with the light and glare of the lava, in particular in the depiction at the bottom right where the force and heat of the eruption seem to escape from the card. The power of the volcano contrasts with the figurative richness of this work, where the figures of the people, carefully defined by a skilful and quick brushstroke, assist the scene with apparent tranquility.
