Watercolour Ink wash on yellowish paper. Provenance Malmö private collection. His personal war experience influenced such subjects as he served in Macedonia. Spencer expresses a painstaking care in an figurative vision of his emotional experience, confirmed on page 82 of the 1980 exhibition catalogue « Stanley Spencer RA » of the Royal Academy of Arts of London. « During their stay in Yugoslavia Spencer painted a total of nine landscapes and made a number of drawings and watercolour studies, often painting alongside his companions. While most of the paintings take minarets as their subjects, at least two, Ragusa & River Nareta, Mostar are composed of more general views of the Yugoslav landscape. As well as the 4 paintings in the exhibition, Spencer also painted five other landscapes in Yugoslavia... All are in Private Collections ». Study of 10 pages available through email.
