In 1978, Duncan Grant spent six months in Tangier with Paul Roche who nursed him, making this painting a rare if not unique testimony of his last time in Tangier. He travelled there several times during his lifetime, beginning in the 1930s. Several other Grant studies from Tangier are in the collection held at Charleston Farmhouse, the home and studio of Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell. In this scene, which focuses more on the urban space than on the coastal fringe, several aspects are striking, including the blue nighttime atmosphere from which emerge only the illuminated facades of some buildings and diffuse points of light in the distance. In the foreground, the city of Tangier with several buildings evoking its medieval architecture and a palm tree in the centre left. In the background, the dark blue "arrows" of two minarets can be seen and the hills of Charf and Tanja El Balia can be seen on the horizon. Ten pages study on email request.
