« Der liebe Scherenschleifer » of 1918-19, one of rare auctioned works 39x52cm reached 52500 € in 2018. Fischer was among the German artists defamed as ‘degenerate’ by the Nazi regime. Lots of artists turned towards religion at the end of their life as Fischer here, 59. Many towns in Brittany have a calvary at a central spot as here on the right, the crucifix. Gauguin saw the calvary in Nizon with women near the cross. As with Gauguin’s Green Christ, in the foreground we see local characters with these two women on a path facing the calvary. In the spirit of symbolism, Fischer did not strive for a realistic depiction but delivered a subjective and personal image. Offering, massive simplified shapes, intense, rather unrealistic colours, plain compartments outlined by solid lines, allowing the artist to increase expression and suggestion. Study on request. Rare Tribute with Museum quality.
