He painted figure compositions, landscapes as here and still lifes. Wellton often depicted motifs from the Mediterranean countries, preferably in earthy colors and in a strict, almost abstract style. He was a member of the group Åkerbokonstnärna, which was formed in 1968 at the initiative of the artist Walter Frylestam. His art is represented at, among others, the National Museum in Stockholm, Gävle Museum, Kalmar County Museum, Kalmar Art Museum, Linköping Museum, Postal Museum and County Museum of Gävleborg.
