No doubt the painting of this dog, portrayed on a "Deventer" carpet, will have been commissioned by its owner. Perhaps a special favour by Van den Berghe, whose oeuvre mainly consists of Alpine landscapes.
Van den Berghe was pupil of A. van der Waayen Pieterszen en studied at the Antwerp Academy from 1848-1849. Between 1847 and 1851 he travelled to the Ardens, the Schwarzwald, Beieren and Tirol. In 1861 he lived in The Hague, untill 1887 Van den Berghe was active as a drawing teacher in Middelburg.
Work of this artist can be found in the Hamburg Museum, the Haags Gemeentemuseum, the Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg and the Frans Halsmuseum in Haarlem. Drawings are in the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, Museum Boymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam and the Rijksprentenkabinet in Amsterdam.
